- Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the new pope. Cardinal Bergoglio reportedly got about 40 votes in the early balloting last time, and has chosen the name Pope Francis I.
- Bergoglio is the first pope from outside of Europe in the modern era, the first South American pope, and the third straight non-Italian pope.
